A furniture showroom in Coimbatore ran Facebook ads for a sofa sale. 40 enquiries came in during the first week.

Their sales guy sent "any update sir?" to every single one of them. Every morning.

By month end, 11 customers had blocked the showroom number. Paid for with ad money, lost with one lazy message.

The Mistake Nobody Notices

"Any update?" is a message for you. Not for the customer.

You want to know if he is buying, so you ask. But what does the customer get from that message? Nothing. No information, no help. Just pressure.

Now think from his side. He enquired about a sofa. He is still comparing 3 shops. He is not ready yet.

Then your message lands at 9 am. Then again next day. Then "sir please confirm".

He doesnt argue. He doesnt reply. He just blocks. And you never find out why.

Why This Happens

Most owners think follow up means chasing. It doesnt.

Chasing is asking for what you want. Following up is giving what the customer needs.

Also, you paid for that lead. The ad money is gone, so you panic and push harder. The customer can feel that panic in every message.

8 out of 10 owners ive seen treat every silent customer as a lost sale. But silence usually means "still thinking". Push a thinking person and he leaves.

What Actually Works

Stop using the words "any update". Delete them from your team's vocabulary today.

Send something useful instead. Ask yourself one question before you press send. Does this message give him something he can use without replying?

A real customer review of your product works. A simple comparison sheet showing your product against the other options works even better.

A known jewellery shop in Salem stopped asking for confirmation and started sending short customer review videos. Replies started coming back. Some were even "not now", which is still a real answer.

The Timing That Works

Reply within the first 5 minutes of the enquiry. Not after 2 hours. The customer is still holding his phone and his interest is hot.

Send the next message after 2 days. This is where the review or comparison sheet goes.

Send the last one after 7 days. Just one message.

No daily messages. Ever. Daily follow up is not persistence. Its pressure with a smile.

Give Them A Choice

Every message should leave the customer an exit that costs him nothing.

Try this line: "If this months budget doesnt fit, no problem. I will contact you next month. Tell me if that works."

That one line changes the mood completely. The customer feels respected, not hunted. And a customer who feels respected replies, even when the answer is no.

A blocked number can never sell again. A customer who said "call me next month" is a sale that just hasnt happened yet.

The Hard Truth

You spent real money to get that enquiry. Every careless message burns a bit of it.

Open your phone right now and look at your last 20 follow up messages. How many actually helped the customer?

Count honestly. The answer will explain your blocked numbers.
